Style changes/updates - not sure what to call (Word 2003 SP2)

Is there anyway to turn off that undocumented feature of Word that creates a new Style every time you modify an existing style. For example if I take some text that is Normal Style and use the Bold button to make it BOLD, then Word creates a new style called Normal Bold. This leads to an incredible proliferation of styles that I really do not want, nor do I need. I am not sure who the incredible wizard was who thought up this feature, but I have my own idea of what is future should be . Any help or inisght that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
