    New to FireFox (1.0.7)

Ok, I have taken the leap and am using Firefox on my home PC.

This add-in thing is new to me. I found one nice add-in called GMail notifier....fine, downloaded it and installed it but I have not told it my gmail account name. How is it supposed to know when to notify me?

At the moment I have the GMail tab open and when a message is sent to me I can see it tell me I have new mail....but that was before I installed it. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

So does anybody know why this add-in is a benefit to me?

By add-in, do you mean 'extension'?

Find Gmail notifier - does it have any options?

I was <img src=/S/rtfm.gif border=0 alt=rtfm width=24 height=23> whilst you were away hunting for the instructions and then realised I had an irritating little icon in the bottom right of my screen and a little flag rolls up. When it arrives, I have to click on it which opens a new tab.

Frankly what is the point, I may as well have the tab already open <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> it does the same job

There probably is no "point" unless you like to point and click lots! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Sorry, I couldn't resist! I do hope you like using Firefox however! It is a handy browser. Much faster IMHO than IE!!

    Re: New to FireFox (1.0.7)

With the hope that I'm not comandeering your thread, I'd like to say that I've just joined you and FINALLY installed Firefox as you have done. The first run seems to have imported my bookmarks and cookies, etc. just fine, so I'll play for awhile before I start worrying about extensions or whatever. Thanks to you (and Skitterbug) for unknowingly providing me the lazy Saturday evening courage to get off my duff and do the job I've been putting off for a long, long time!

Since Leif doesn't want it, I'll be "Frankly."

Frankly, I'm more concerned about my EMAIL than I am a browser. Ever since the advent of the internet, I've been a Netscape and then Mozilla email user and I have years and years of email files I don't want to lose. So, frankly the next step, that of installing Thunderbird is more worrisome to me than the Firefox part. We'll see what we shall see...

    Re: New to FireFox (1.0.7)

Well, the tabbing with GMail thing worked fine as it refreshes as soon as the mail arrives, hence my quick response. (I am watching a film at the moment and saw it refresh <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>

The email thing at your is beyond my knowledge...

Don't worry about installing Thunderbird. Your email will migrate easily.

    Re: New to FireFox (1.0.7)

    My biggest issues with Thunderbird:

    1. USUALLY, but not always, Thunderbird highlights each mail box that has just received unread mail. This makes it difficult to find incoming messages that have been filterd to any one of a few hundred mailboxes. The workaround is to defing an "Incoming Search" that you have to run manually AFTER the mail has been received. Note that the search USUALLY, but not always detects all the mail ljust received. I would prefer that an emai lprogram build a list of the just received messages so we do not have to manually run a search.

    2. Several issues in mapping Eudora filters to Thunderbird. Filtering functionality is very different in Eudora and Thunderbird. Note that Thunderbird does not import Eudora's filters.

    3. There appears to be a bug related to daylight time. See http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.ph...1e126db47b23903.

    4. One cannot program Thunderbird (or Firefox) using VB.

Note: I am currently creating VB code to "use" Eudora filters with Outlook. I'm trying to write the code so it won't be too hard to "use" Thunderbird filters with Outlook. Once that's done, I may try the reverse mapping.

    Re: New to FireFox (1.0.7)

And that it did sir, that it did! I'm quite happy with the performance of BOTH Firefox and Thunderbird during the installation AND import of my old Mozilla settings, bookmarks, mail and so on. Everything went without a hitch and now I'm learning, tweaking (slightly, so far) and re-setting my scheduled nightly backups for the new profiles. I do like the discreet look of Firefox except I'll have to see if there's a way to change those ugly little YELLOW folders on my Personal Toolbar <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19>.

Thanks to Jezza and all for providing the motivation - finally...

I RH mouse clicked them, and deleted them...I treated them like beards and got rid of them, I found them very irritating <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Re: New to FireFox (1.0.7)

Somehow I knew you'd say that - about beards, I mean! Well, I ain't gonna delete the Personal Toolbar, since that's my "shortcut" to my most frequently used bookmarks. I have, today, done some testing with themes and it does seem that it's all or none. Most of the themes have something different shown for the yellow folder icons, but I don't see anything (so far) that allows one to put a folder icon of your choice like Windows does. Minor point though, since my brief 24 hour stint with FF so far has been very nice.
