spell check emails (WinXP Outlook 2002)

When I send an email, I have it set to check spelling before sending. Outlook checks everything, including the mistakes in the email I am replying to, which I dont want. The message comes up that some areas are not checked due to being marked for no spell check, but I cant see how to extend this to cover all the previous text, apart from my own message. Any help on this would be great. Thanks.

Perhaps it's because you are using Word as your editor, and the author of the prior message text did also?

Usually the checkbox to "ignore original message text" (Tools>Options..., Spelling tab) works, but if I change the mail format (e.g., from Plain Text to HTML or HTML to Plain Text) then it checks the whole thing. I haven't noticed any other patterns of misbehavior. (I do not use Word as my mail editor.)
