    Word Headers/Footers (2003)

I am having difficulties with Word when I am working with headers and footers. I want to have different headers or footers for pages within the same document but everytime I make a change to 1 page all others get updated. How can I make this problem go away?

You must put a section break between the areas where you want different Headers or Footers. Also there is an icon on the toolbar "Link to Previous". This becomes important if you do not want page numbering to be continuous.

Can you be a bit more specific? I have tried the section break but the same issue still exists.

    Insert/Break/Section Break

If you are editing an existing doc, you can insert a continuous section break at the top of the page where you want the section to begin. You can also insert a next page section break which combines a page break and a section break. The Header and Footer toolbar will appear when you go to edit either. When you are in the section where you want a different header or footer, click the Link to Previous icon until the connection to the previous section is broken.

Under Help, follow the instructions for different headers or footers in different sections.

In addition to Redbeard's spot-on reply, here is a screenshot of the Header/Footer toolbar with the relevant button highlighted (it looks slightly different in Word 2003, but the idea is the same)

If you find that you need a section break on every page to accomplish what you want, then there may be a better solution. For example, Word has certain fields that update on every page. The page number is one example, but also the STYLEREF field which can be used for the "first and last" entry in a particular style, as you might see on the tops of the pages in a printed telephone directory. (Assuming you don't immediately put them in the recycling bin. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> )
