    WholeStory (2000 sp-3/ 98SE)

I've processed a document, "story" at a time, to unlink fields. But I never realized the inconsistent behaviour of the WholeStory object. For instance,

    Selection.WholeStory
    Selection.Copy
    Set newDoc = Documents.Add
    Selection.Paste

will paste body, headers, footers (all story ranges?) to the new document. However,

    Selection.WholeStory
    Selection.Fields.Unlink

will only unlink fields in wdMainTextStory.

Is there a reason for the apparently different behaviours?

Selection.WholeStory is the entire story range that contains the selection, so if the selection is in the body of the document, WholeStory is the body of the document. Actions will apply to the body only. However, the headers and footers are "stored" in the section break markers and in the final paragraph mark of the document body. So if you copy and paste the entire document body, you'll copy the headers and footers with it.

    Thanks Hans. Makes sense.
