Downloaded templates from Microsoft (Windows XP)

I downloaded templates with the extension XXXXXXX.cab from Microsoft to my desktop and when I click twice on the Icons it opens in Winzip but the file isn't showing instead a menu comes up and ask me to ADD. I tried everything from creating an Archive to extracting the file and I always get the same problem. It seems that nothing will open a cab file. I always trust Microsoft and normally don't have a problem in downloading templates. Can someone help.

Can you tell us the web address (URL) from which you downloaded the templates? I've never encountered a template download with extension .cab.

    Me too.

MSFT would not distribute templates in a .cab file.
THe .cab may indeed be part of a larger installation package and might include templates, but I suspect they are not for direct distribution.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

I'm sorry I forgot to mention that it was a zip file but when I tried to unzip the files had a cab extension. I could not extract them or open them. Sorry about that. I got it here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/template...3472041033.aspx

Can you tell us which one? The URL you provided is to a list of templates (Occasions and Events).

Re: Downloaded templates from Microsoft (Windows XP)

Please help us help you by providing links. It's VERY easy: just put <!t><!/t> before, and <!t><!/t> after a web address. This spares other Loungers the trouble of having to select the address, copy it to the clipboard and paste it in the address bar of their browser - with a link, a single click is sufficient.

The templates open directly in the application they're intended for if it is installed on your PC. The first one, for example, is for Publisher 2002 or later. Since I have Publisher 2002, it opens directly. The second template is for Publisher 2003 only. Since I don't have that, a download page appears with instructions. But unless I want to download the template for someone else, it would be useless. Here is an excerpt of the instructions:

[list=1]
Click the Download Now button below.
The template downloads as a compressed file called a cabinet (.CAB) file.

In the File Download dialog box, click Save.

Select the folder where you want to save the compressed file, and then click Save.

Open the folder where you saved the compressed file, and then double-click the file.

Use one of the following methods to extract the template from the compressed file:

If the file opens in WinZip

Thank you very much for your instructions on (URL). I didn't know about that. You said the templates only open in the application they're intended for now that makes sense to me because I don't have Publisher. I'll watch for that from now on. I learn so much on this lounge. Thanks everyone.
