    Mail Merge (Office 2003/SP2)

In Word 2000 when I did a Mail Merge I could put spaces or punctuation between fields as I was inserting the Merge Fields. I haven't found a way to do that in Word 2003 without closing the Insert Merge Filed dialog box and putting in the desired space or punctuation and then reopening the Insert Merge Field dialog box again. This seem wrong especially when I want to but a space between fields such as FirstName, MiddleName, Lastname, etc. Can it be done on the fly as in Word 2000? If so how?

    Thanks.

    Hans,

Thanks for the re[reply. I will try it again. I never did get it to work the first time you tried to help me but maybe now it will make more sense. An yes, I do recall asking that long ago but as I said, I never got it to work properly for me.

    Re: Mail Merge (Office 2003/SP2)

    Hans,

I got the toolbar and the commands working but I see no way to insert the Postal Code (Bar Code). I didn't see it as one of the Merge Fields nor did I see it on the right side of the Word Document where Word 2003 starts its mail Merge commands. How can I use the Mail Merge Helper and the Insert Merge Field command and still be able to insert the Postal Bar Code?

    Thanks.

If the postal code is not a merge field, how do you expect to insert it?

    Re: Mail Merge (Office 2003/SP2)

It was always available in Word 2000 and if I labor through Word 2003's mail merge it is available there also but the work around you gave, which I like now that I understand it, doesn't seem to offer that option. I didn't know if Word defined the Postal Bar Code as a merge field or not? I guess what you're saying is that this work around doesn't offer it as an available "whatever" to insert into the document?

I have the Dutch language version of Word. The online help states that support for postal bar codes is only available in the US English version, so I'm afraid I cannot help you with this. I hope someone else can.

    Hi hlewton,

If you have the barcode data available for merging, you should be able to enclose that in a barcode field and produce the results you're after.

    Thus, if you can generate:

    macropod,

Thanks but you have lost me. Word 2000 must have done all that behind the scene.

    Re: Mail Merge (Office 2003/SP2)

If you can dredge up an old merge document and view the fields, it might become apparent exactly how it was done in earlier versions.

I know that long ago I used a forgotten feature to insert a bar code. I believe Word duplicated the entire address block when I did this but, actually, all it needed was the zip code (preferably a zip+4 format zip code). Perhaps if you use macropod's BARCODE field wrapped around a MERGEFIELD with the zip code, that's all it will take?

    Re: Mail Merge (Office 2003/SP2)

    jscher2000,

Yeah I always used the Zip Code in conjunction with the Street Address to do the Bar Code. I found an easier way where I don't have to do a lot of things that I'm unfamiliar with but I have to jump back and forth between the way Word 2003 does things and the way Word 2000 does them. Microsoft sure know how to screw things up and it is even a known problem and yet still they don't seem to have a good (easy) way to correct their screw up.

    Thanks.

    Hi hlewton,

I'm using Word 2000 and I don't see any option to insert a mergefield as a barcode. No mention of it in Word's help file either. I suspect you would have had to format the merged data, either directly or by enclosing it in a barcode field as per my previous post.

    Cheers

    macropod,

See attachment. This option has been available since at least Office 97 when I began to use it.
