Format Settings dialog box - Options grayed out (2002/sp2)

From the Styles and Formatting task pane, I chose Show:Custom. The Format Settings dialog box appeared. Under the area "Other formatting," three options are grayed out: Font formatting, Paragraph formatting and Bullet & Numbering formatting.

Can anyone tell me what condition must be met for them to become available?

    Thanks!

This works in Word 2003 but I can't see why it won't do the same in Word 2002. Go into Tools > Options > Edit Tab. Put a tick in the option called "Keep Track of Formatting". Make a few local formatting edits to the file and see the new pseudo-styles in the style list. Now go back to the same dialog and you will discover those options are now available.

You may decide (like me) that you don't really need those options available when you realise the price you have to pay to do it .

    Hi, Andrew!

That worked. Now that I know, I can turn off "Keep Track of Formatting."

I love styles, and have used them since WordPerfect 5.1 DOS. Microsoft certainly created chaos out of their great styles when they added "Keep Track of Formatting" -- especially when they turned it on by default.

Thanks, Andrew, for your time and right-on response.
