possible to recover deleted files???

Is it really possible to recover deleted files? My other half has just managed to delete four weeks worth of work ... he's just gone to throw himself off a bridge, so I thought I'd ask you lovely guys if you had any ideas.

These are cad drawings and he's running Xp on a laptop ... he's deleted the stuff from a flash drive and for some reason they've gone from the hard drive as well .. they not in recycle bin and appear to have vanished.

A quick look through google shows a few recovery programs ... do they work? Is there anyway I can check that these files are still on his laptop, is it really possible that they are still on his computer? ....

    any help appreciated

    xx

Yes, it is possible to recover deleted files, but you need special recovery tools.

IMPORTANT: don't use the laptop for anything else, for since the files have been marked as deleted in the directory, the space they occupied is now free to be used by other files. In particular, do not install the recovery tools on the same hard disk that contains the deleted files - you would probably overwrite the deleted files. You should connect to the laptop from another computer that runs the recovery software,

thanks for that .... is there any particular program you recommend?

my four year old has started a game up on it, this is a game which is on the laptop hard drive ... but we turned the game straight off, and although OH has been browsing through the files to see if he can find the ones hes lost .. nothing else has been touched ... will they still be there do you think? I really don't know how they've disappeared but they have.

I can download anything need from my PC and then use it on the laptop, but I haven't a clue which I need to use ... any recommendations would be great.

    thanks

Restoration.exe has worked for me in the past. (and it is )

The program recommended by SteveH has been mentioned favorably in the Lounge before, so give it a try. Another one is mentioned in <post:=455,708>post 455,708</post:>.

very depressed ... don't think its going to work .... I've restored files that were deleted today to another flashdrive and it says they 're all shortcuts and that the file they point to isn't there anymore

Have you tried recovering the files from the original flash drive? If they were stored there, they wouldn't go to the recycle bin when they were deleted and if no other work was done with this drive, it's possible that they might still be there. Might be worth a look.

Have you checked all of them very carefully? If the original files had already been overwritten, I fear there is no way to retrieve them.

Yeah I managed to get a couple of files off of there ... I've left them on the flashdrive though 'cos I daren't do anything else with them ... I don't know whether they are the ones he's looking for or not seeing as he's still out looking for a bridge and he's not took his phone with him ;-) I'll be sure to let you know when he gets back ...lol

Sounds like what your other half did was to store the files on the flash drive and put shortcuts to the files on the hard drive. Hopefully he took his bungee gear with him when he went bridge jumping and will return.

I'd bet that the files you found on the flash drive are the ones he is looking for. For future reference, tell him to backup important work to two different sources, one of which can't be erased (like a CD), and to verify all backups and copies to be sure that all the backup files are files and not shortcuts.

Well, we'll keep our . Hopefully your OH is unsuccessful with his bridge hunting . As a little addendum to Doc's excellent advice, if he stores the files on the hard drive and accidentally deletes them, they will be recoverable from the recycle bin. You won't have to depend on any third party utility. If they are stored on removable media (eg. flash drive, floppy) and are deleted, they never make it to the recycle bin.

I haven't used Recover My Files, but it's made to recover lost AutoCAD files. You might want to give it a try. Hope it's not too late; if the files are still on the removable drive, they should be able to be recovered. Good luck.

As usual you guys are the tops ... OH decided not to jump from the bridge afterall and finally came home later that night very depressed ... but turns out the files that were recovered on the flash drive were the ones he thought lost forever I'm seriously popular in this house right now (he's gone to buy me a bottle of wine) and its all down to you lot .....
