Word and the Registry (2000 SR3 & 20003)

Can someone explain the reason for having the following registry keys on a Word 2003 installation, and the consequence (if any), of not having them?

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice8.0Wo rd . . . and
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0Word . . .

    Regards
    Don

Well, there are a lot of possibilities. What keys/values are listed under those keys?

I wouldn't worry about them. I have ...8.0Outlook and ...9.0... entries on my work PC with Office 2003 too.

Thank you both for your speedy responses. The message was prompted by a cry for help from a colleague that couldn't open a number of documents from a third party. An excerpt from her message is provided below.

Frequently when I get a document from XXX , I cannot open it.
    He is working with 2003.
    I looked at this

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft Office9.0WordOptions

but, he doesn't have the latter part?

Checking my 2003 machine, I found entries for Word versions 8.0 and 9.0.

I have just received word that the document was created by cutting and pasting from many sources. A sample problem document had duplicate Heading1 Heading2 and Heading3 styles. Deleting one set in the 2003 environment seems to have cleared the problem.

Thank you both again for your support.
    Regards
    Don
