    Sorting data (Excel 2000)

I need to find a way of sorting data in a given column but the sort is to ignore the first character and sort on the 2nd character

    IE
    data
    7roberts
    4apple
    8bobby
    4wrench

would result in sorted data as

    4apple
    8bobby
    7roberts
    4wrench

Any ideas how i create this sort ( i guess i need a macro or a vb code)

    thanks

    Re: Sorting data (Excel 2000)

Say that your data are in column A, starting in A1.
    In B1, enter this formula:

    =MID(A1,2,1000)

and fill down as far as needed. Click in B1, then click the Sort Ascending button. The data will be sorted on column B, and column A will automatically be sorted with it.

(1000 is an arbitrary number larger than the length of all entries in column A)
