Word Exit Problems (Office 2000 SP1)

Ever since updating to Office 2003 and WOPR 2003 I have had troubles exiting Word. I can close any open documents, but I can't exit the program correctly. No matter if I use the File>Exit, the "X" box, or WOPR Commander Exit the program stops responding.

I have uninstalled and re-installed WOPR and Office 2003 but so far nothing has helped. Any ideas? WOPR Tech Support has not responded.

Can you exit Word normally when WOPR is uninstalled?

    Yes I can.

BTW, I had problems getting WOPR 2003 to re-install, so I wonder if my copy of the program (purchased as a download) is corrupt?

It's probably best to run Word without WOPR until you get the problems with it sorted out.

I'm sorry about the lack of technical support for WOPR. Although this discussion forum operates under Woody's name, it is not associated with WOPR. There used to be someone from the WOPR team who answered questions here, but he hasn't been online for over a year and a half now.

I've written to Tech Support twice in recent weeks, but my understanding is that WOPR is nearly defunct now. Only Mike is left for tech support and I'm sure he's overwhelmed.

I appreciate your advice on WOPR, but I have no idea how to sort it out and I don't want to lose the functionality of WOPR -- which is why I bought it in the first place. One thing I'd like to try is to get a clean copy of WOPR, but no one has told me how I can download a new copy, in case my original download file got corrupted somehow.

It occurs to me... when you say you upgraded, did you upgrade over an existing installation of Word 2000/WOPR 2000? If so, I wonder whether there might be some lingering components that need to be cleaned out. As discussed in many threads on the General Office Solutions board, this can be an arduous process involving an "eraser" program. Also you have to rebuild all your settings if you do that...

In the other thread, did we discuss Outlook and the Word-Outlook relationship? If you are using Word as your Outlook mail editor, which is the default, you might deselect that and see if it helps.

Yes, I did originally install WOPR 2003 as an upgrade. Office 2003 was a new installation, and I've uninstalled and re-install both programs. However, I'm not sure that Office 2000 and WOPR 2000 are completely removed from my system. I'll try using WIndows Add/Remove Components and see if that helps.

What are the "eraser" programs you mentioned? And when you say "rebuild all your settings" do you mean WOPR and Office settings or are there more effects? I have Norton Systemworks 2005 and it has an uninstall utility....will that work?

I have Outlook installed, but I don't use it as my default email client. But I will open the program and deselect the option anyway and see if that helps.

Re: Word Exit Problems (Office 2000 SP1)

    Hey Guys! Guess What! SUCCESS!!!!!!!

I checked to see if WOPR 2000 was still hanging around...nope. There was a folder, but it was empty. I deleted the folder.

I removed Office 2000 using the WIndows control panel Add/Remove option.

I also went into Outlook and unchecked the box that selected Word for editing or viewing emails. As I wrote before, I don't use Outlook as my default email client but when installing Office 2003, the administrator set up Outlook as the email editor for use with his company server (I installed WOPR 2003 later for my own use). That server setup is no longer used, so changing the Outlook options was easy.

With some hope, I went into Word, tried to exit from WOPR Commander. It worked.

I re-opened Word, tried to exit from the File>Exit option. It worked.

I re-opened Word again, opened a file, then closed the file. Then I used the "X" box to exit Word. It worked.

    So it all WORKED!!

Thank you for all your help! I would have never found this on my own.

    Congratulations on your persistence!

Regarding eraser programs, these are downloads from Microsoft that can scrub all traces of Office from your system. Since you don't need it at this point, I'll just note that a Lounge search should turn up some links.
