When I view the source, I see that your sig has "title=" and then a SPACE. Would you mind changing that to eliminate the space to see if it's a syntactical problem, Jerry? (I got the same result that Hans reported)

Thanks fer tryin' Jerry but the result was the same, i.e. the text truncates after the "...gr"

I'm at a loss for explanation.

    Hans,

I used this initially as an experiment to test for accessibility for web browsers and screen readers. The question I ask is:

"As the screen tip does not show the whole text, can screen readers read it and "speak" the description out to those with visual impairment?"

I would be interested to know...any chance this could be moved to the relevant forum as it will be am interesting reference for the future.

    Jerry,

I can also see the whole alt tag as mbarron <post:=535,861>post 535,861</post:> and the "Skin" I am using currently is "Oldstyle L". Have you done anything different or could this be a clue? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

That makes three, Jerry. Picking up on the previous two posts, I changed my FF Theme from Default to Walnut and can now see the entire phrase in your sig. (I used Walnut to test with a different theme than the other two folks used.)

    Thanks Al and Skitter

I was doing some homework on the reasons for this and found:

    Display of Titles (in browsers)

    Screen Reader support

Now what we have to assume is that the screen reader is actually reading the HTML code, for sure, but is there a limitation to the various pieces of screen readers to interpret the title/alt tag <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Re: Alt v Title tag

Talking of Alt tags in FF, can you explain something odd, please?

    If I view - for example - <post:=533,697>post 533,697</post:>, and move my cursor, I can get the Alt text popping up for <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>, then <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>, and then for Jezza's sig.
However, if I move my cursor away from Jezza's sig then back again, it doesn't show.
    I move it back to <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>, and nothing shows.
    I move it back to <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15> and it does show, and then back onto <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> which does show, but Jezza's sig doesn't.

However, if I have multiple tabs open, and just hover the cursor over another tab (without clicking it) then back over Jezza's sig, Jezza's Alt text shows again just the once, then it's back to the sequence above.

(This is not specific to the Lounge. Pages such as this BBC one allow me to see the Alt on the first picture, then I have to 'reload' the cursor with the 'hover-over-another-tab' trick, and it will then show me the alt text for one picture but not the other.)

    Wazgoin'on?

    Re: Alt v Title tag

Whew! I tried it and the alt tag shows up for me no matter what sequence I use - in both places (Jezza's post and the CNN page). I imagine you have cleared your cache and do so regularly so other than to confirm that it works for me okay, I have nothing to suggest! <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> It just sounds tedious for you to have to mess about like that to see the Alt tags! <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>
