Firefox 1.5 appears! (1.5)

This has just been offered to me on my Windows 98 SE box as an update, and Google Toolbar v3 is available for installation!

That will probably be Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 3, there is still no official announcement about when Firefox 1.5 final will be released.

Odd! It didn't say anything about RC3 when it downloaded, and the Help => About says just 1.5!

But http://www.getfirefox.com does indeed offer only v1.5 rc3

    Re: Firefox 1.5 appears! (1.5)

There has been much talk on the MozillaZine forums about this and it has caused quite a bit of confusion. Since mid-October the Firefox version in the nightly test builds and for all 3 release candidates has been shown as 1.5 even though the final version has not been released yet.

If you look at Help>About Mozilla Firefox you will see something like the following:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5

That is what you should see for the Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 3. The 20051111 is the date the code for Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 3 en-US version was compiled.

    John,
I installed it (Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 3) last night; the public "final" release hadn't been released at that point. I don't know if Mozilla.org has pages specific to particular countries -- perhaps, you're viewing an "English" page -- but here in the US, RC3 is what's being offered. Oh, it's working fine, by the way.

Yes, that is the Gecko date which I have! Wouldn't have been too difficult to have included the RCn information in Help => About, though...

    Re: Firefox 1.5 appears! (1.5)

This is what Firefox developer Asa Dotzler said when Fx 1.5 RC2 was released

For those wondering why this is called Firefox 1.5 and not Firefox 1.5 RC2, it's because this is a genuine release candidate. The build you have, if not problems are found, will be Firefox 1.5. If we called it RC2 in the actual client, it wouldn't be a real release candidate because we'd have to make changes to the name and then create new builds.

On the bright side, when Firefox 1.5 is finally released you will not have to download it but instead you can use the new binary update system which will only require you to download a small update file.

    Re: Firefox 1.5 appears! (1.5)

While you folks are talking about the upcoming release of 1.5 may I ask another newbie question, please? I AM trying to learn my way around all the various Firefox/Thunderbird web pages and there's a lot of catch-up reading for me to do. The first places I've been are the FAQs and Release Notes, but I've got a lot more familiarization to do. Meanwhile, the question. During my long days through Netscape and then Mozilla, I have been in the habit of uninstalling when it comes time to upgrade to a new version. I don't remember if that was required or just my silly habit. Is it necessary with FF to uninstall 1.0.x when the time comes to move up to version 1.5? The second part, even though I don't yet have any extensions installed, how about extensions - are they all automatically voided and have to be re-installed to the new version? I guess that depends on whether the extension is viable in the new release or not, huh? I guess I'm just fishing for a rule-of-thumb procedure, if there is such a thing.

    Re: Firefox 1.5 appears! (1.5)

You should have no problems installing Firefox 1.5 over 1.0.x, though I did a clean install for the initial installation of all versions of Firefox that I currently run.

Starting with Firefox 1.5 there is a new update system that makes it far easier to upgrade. There will be no need to download the full installation package for future updates. Instead there is a "Check for updates" option that will download and install a smaller binary patch contained just the updated components. You can also set up Firefox to automatically download and install the updates.

As for extensions & themes, when Firefox 1.5 is first run it checks to see if they are compatible. If they are not compatible it checks for updates and disables any that have no updates available leaving only compatible extensions and themes enabled.

Updating Thunderbird 1.5 will work in the same way as Firefox 1.5

Al, for what it's worth I always uninstall an existing version before loading up a new one. Just seems a prudent course of action IMHO to prevent future problems.
