    The Back button (XP Professional)

I know I have 'system re-set' or something like that, but I don't really trust XP anymore. Is there a way to get the Back Button back without this? Somehow, I lost
it.....I don't know what I did, but it's gone now.
    Thanks for past help.

Perhaps it's just early in the morning here, but what 'Back Button'?

Do you mean the Back button in Windows Explorer or in Internet Explorer? Try View | Toolbars | Customize... in the affected application.
If 'Back' is present in the list of 'Available toolbar buttons' on the left, select it and click 'Add->'. You can also click 'Reset' to restore the toolbar to its default layout. Finally, click 'Close'.

In XP, when you open a file, at the top left of the page, there is an arrow pointing back (to the previous page)........that's the one I'm talking about. Hope that's clear??

If you mean the Back button in the Open and Save dialogs (to the right of the 'Look in' dropdown list):
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type regedit and press Enter.
    - Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPolicies
    - If there is a key Comdlg32 under Policies, select it and look for a value named NoBackButton. If its value is 1, set it to 0 or delete the value.

Re: The Back button (XP Professional)

I found the little devil. After trying several of the suggestions, and not being able to complete the task, I finally tried "View /Toolbars/Standard Buttons", and
there it was! My remaining question is what I could have done to lose the button in the first place??? I always seem to have mysterious problems, and it's been
suggested that my CAD programs are causing havoc with poor old Windows. Any ideas what I should beware of ?
Thanks for all the help in the past - I really do appreciate it.

If selecting Standard Buttons solved it, more than just the Back button must have been missing; there was no way we could have guessed that from your description.
