No Numbers!!

Clean downgraded W2000 to W98 (don't ask).. All is well except -- I can't type in numerals from either the main keyboard or the numbers pad. Keys respond with the shifted character (5 --> %). During the 98 install I had to select the Product code using the on-screen alfanumeric presentation. There was something about using LEFT ALT + SHIFT to change the shifted character back to the unshifted number. Worked only occasionally.

New keyboard, clean installation of W98. Everything else works. Any help for this weird?

This is probably off the mark, but have you checked the Accessibility control panel to see if special options for "sticky keys" etc. have been set?

This also if far out, but have you looked at the BIOS just for insurance to see what it says about NumLock? Maybe just switching it once or twice will give the hardware a kick in the pants.

Weird to use when the keyboard acts so strangely. Thank you both above for your replies.
It turns out the brand new keyboard was defective in a way to reverse the action of Caps Lock for alfa characters and would only produce the upper case symbols for numerals. <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>
