Display text field in Pivot Data Items area (Excel XP)

    Hi,
If memory serves correctly, I recall this Q being asked quite a while back, but I cannot find it!?

Is it possible to display a text field (say, a Client Name) in the Pivots Data Items drop area? I don't want it to sum or count or do any aggregate summary, I just want the name displayed? Is this possible??

    Tx
    Regards,
    Rudi

No, the Data area of a pivot table can only contain numeric fields.

    Tx for the reply.
Do you possibly have any other suggestion for doing this? The clients who requested this did not give me details, but say I have info structured as follows: Months by Column, OrderID by Row, then I want the name of the SalesPerson from a list displayed on the Row/Column intersection. Is there a way to do this if Pivots cannot?

    Tx

Some kind of Index/Match/Lookup could work. Could you provide some more details of the setup?

Tx for the response Steve. I will need to see if I can get a sample file from the client so that I can keep this post in context. I'll come back to this if the client can provide something!

FWIW, I need to do something similar with a department to-do list. I simply put the names, projects, due dates or whatever in the non-data area and forget the data area altoghether. I can then drag my row fields around as I like to get the various views. Someetimes I let the due date fall into the data field because it seems to give a correct result.

Tx for the tip Torquemada. I'll give this a try and see if I can offer this as a tip for the client I'm dealing with.

Another brainstorm: I suddenly recall Hans mensioning some while back that Access Pivot tables can display text in the data items area. I am going to try this too!
