    If I use the menu (Format - Patterns - Color) to change the background
    colour in any cell on the spreadsheet, the cell does not change colour. If I
    cut the cell and move it away, the colour changes, if I move it back to the
    original cell, the colour stays changed. But next time, having saved the
    sheet, the colour is back to the original colour until I do the same process
    on another cell in which case... the colour changes again! Does anyone recognise this and how I can get format to work? Thanks.

    Is there conditional formatting on the cell that is "masking" the explict formatting in some cases?

    Have checked that and no conditional formatting has been set.

    Could you post a downsized copy of the workbook? You can remove all information, as long as the cells still display the problem behavior.
