FBI Scam Alert

This may be 'nothing' and may only be applicable to USA people but I read it on CNN just now and thought I'd pass it along for whatever it's worth.

The FBI would say it's a scam, wouldn't it?

Just because these messages are generated by the SOBER.AG worm/virus doesn't mean the FBI isn't monitoring our web surfing.

...FBI did not send these e-mails and does not send any other unsolicited e-mails to the public...

Same claim, for example, that Microsoft has made for years!

So, if you're 'lucky' enuf to get one of the emails, let us know what the attachment says, but please don't forward the email...

I just received a copy of the .CF variation of this worm. It was in the guise of a mail delivery failure. The attachment was mail.zip, containing a single file File-packed_dataInfo.exe No reference to the FBI with this one though.

    Re: FBI Scam Alert

Some unfortunate slob within our company's firewall has opened up the can worms by opening the attachment and now the response time of our entire network has gone to as the antivirus scanner is busy scrubbing the network of the thing! Our system lets the email continue to it's destination, but with the offending piece of malware removed, but in doing so the system is still being flooded with . Some of the spoofed senders are admin@fbi.gov, admin@lucent.com.

    Re: FBI Scam Alert

My version came from Mail@cia.gov (the CIA is going to send me me mail, right?!), the attached file was question_list.zip, and my ISP trapped it and said it contained the Email-Worm.Win32.Sober.y (don't know whose naming convention that is).

Would that ALL ISPs would screen emails for viruses and spam!

Sober.Y; that is an F-Secure name on this "critter". F-Secure Computer Virus Information Pages: Sober.Y. Seems like, according to same F-secure, it is going big, largest outbreak this year, so far. But it is hard to understand, after all you have to be quite curious to step further; open the zip archive etc.

    Re: FBI Scam Alert

Mine too, Alan. I just came home and found this one in my MailWasher screen. MailWasher saves the day, again! I copied the header information from the MailWasher screen - note the name of the attachment at the very end. (I've blacked out the name of the domain, which was correct, but the addressee is NOT me!) When they start, they go wild, don't they?

    Re: FBI Scam Alert

I came across one some time back that attempted to use similar banal trickery. It also passworded the .ZIP, "for security reasons" the message claimed (in reality - to thwart the AV scanners etc.) but then told you the password in the plaintext of the message body! For some obscure reason, I smelt a rat with that one.
