    Trend Micro PC-Cillin Slowdown

I am using Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 for antivirus and NOT their firewall. This is (the end of) my third year with the product. I have been and am still very satisfied with it. However, I remember a few months ago, there was a glitch reported here in The Lounge about one of their pattern updates that caused problems for a lot of people. To their credit, Trend Micro fixed whatever it was quickly and I was lucky enough not to have had any problems at that time.

A few days ago, I arose in the AM to find a familiar Trend Micro pattern update screen waiting for me (see attachment). I have my updates preferences set to notify me so I always know that the latest has been run. When I clicked to allow the update, it took a LONG time for both the download and the install - several minutes as opposed to the usual seconds. In addition to that, even after the update finished, my machine was running at a crawl, even through a reboot. After rebooting however, the machine seemed OK and nothing was amiss in the Task Manager Processes screen as far as CPU is concerned. My overnight virus scan had completed OK, I ran Spybot and AdAware with nothing found and CHKDSK of all partitions was clean. For a time there (another thread) I thought it was because my overnight defrag operation had failed, but since then I'm not so sure that was the cause.

This extreme slowness of Trend Micro's update continues, even to a short time ago when it happened again. I've tried to look on their web pages for places where problems might be reported and I'm not too familiar with finding a forum or whatever to look at. My question to users is whether anyone else is experiencing slowness in the pattern update process and/or if anyone has seen any reported problems on the web. For all I know it could be just something in their latest engine that's taking somewhat longer to do the updates, since everything else seems to be running OK.

    Re: Trend Micro PC-Cillin Slowdown

Mousing over my PC-cillin 2005 task tray icon showed 7.510.1002/2.961.00

After right-clicking and using Update Components, it shows 7.510.1002/2.963.00

No problem with the download or install.

You could try disabling Sygate temporarily and seeing if that helps.

You also could try this solution. Although you don't have the error message, a partial/incomplete update could be blocking up the system, and maybe this clean-out and manual download will work around it: The ActiveUpdate Internal Error 46 message appears when performing an update in Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005.

    Finally, you could try tech support. It's free. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I just manually updated and it actually went a tad faster than average. I suppose that only means a smaller file. I am now at "/2.965.000" You may want to run SFC to replace any corrupt files. Also I have found that if the video driver has a corrupt file more things than you can imagine can go off track. It would not hurt to check for a video driver update. I know nVidia has posted new drivers recently.

Thanks for that link. If the problem persists, I'm gonna give that a try for it doesn't look like it would "break" anything. Like you and Sinjin, I just did a manual update to pattern 965 and although it took "about a minute or so" to download and install, it didn't seem as long as it has been taking. I think I'll take a wait and see approach. Thanks folks.
