Longdesc

This is a continuation of <!post=Alt v Title tag,535818>Alt v Title tag<!/post> the post never really came toa conclusion to how to do this apart from adding extensions.

I have looked into getting a long description into an image or object so that people with visual impairment can get a better description of the image/object.

I was discussing with another tutor tonight that the longdesc attribute has worked for them in the past and had a go with it tonight at college where they use IE 6.....problems arose, the syntax I used was:

The jezzadesc.htm would have held a large amount of text.

I was assured that this is a pretty standard attribute and used across platforms. When I used in IE6 the inbuilt pop up blocker stopped it and when I tried to allow it, I never saw it again. Using FF I get nothing <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15>

Anybody had experience og longdesc before and could give me a pointer most sites don't cover the triouble shooting aspect of this attribute?

    Re: Longdesc

When I add that attribute to an image... in IE, nothing happens (no pop-up or warning, this is from my desktop) if I mouse over or click.

In Firefox, I read that the URL or text of the longdesc attribute appears in the image properties (right-click, Properties). In my test the URL appears and it isn't click-able.

??? I guess only screen readers care about this particular attribute...

    Thanks Jefferson

You have just confirmed I am not going nuts over this, as I too get it in FF right click properties info. I shall test from my home PC as the college PC's are lock down so tight I can't even get a cigarette paper between the gaps.

I must get hold of some screen reader software to get to the bottom of this. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
