    admin password (Windows XP)

One of my friends forgot his administrator password and can not do any installations in his PC, is there a way to reset the administrator password without re-istalling windows?

The problem is that the account that he can access does not have administrator privilidges.

If you have no administrator access then the official Microsoft line is you need to do a clean install.
How to log on to Windows XP if you forget your password or your password expires

There are 3rd party tools that can reset an administrator password. If you use encrypted file system you will not be able to access those files once the password has been reset. I have never used any of these tools and use them at your own risk. See this Google Search for some of these 3rd party tools.

    Re: admin password (Windows XP)

It's always difficult when using the word "administrator" concerning WinXP. If his normal administrator account is one he (or the IT guy) created for him, there should still be the "built-in" administrator account that XP normally is installed with. Try rebooting the machine, logging in as ADMINISTRATOR and use NO password to see if that account is active.

There are many tools available for this purpose; I've used this one many times. It works beautifully, and is easy to use. Good luck.

That's the one I use too, I have a bootable CD in my emergency tool bag and have successfully used it on a number of occassions.
