Right-click anywhere on the desktop (but not on the icon), from pop-up menu choose "Arrange Icons By" and deselect (click on) "Auto Arrange" removing the checkmark.

The Auto-Arrange was not checked at any time. Thus, some thing else is causing this problem.

Do you have the "Modified" option on your Right-click>Arrange Icons By menu ?? My desktop has been this way for so long I don't recall if it's a selection I made or one Windows made for me way back when. If you have the option, arrange your desktop to suit you and then right-click and select Modified from the Arrange Icons By menu. HTH

    XP Pro SP2

I am searching for a solution to desktop icons rearranging upon restart for a client at work. I just tried your "modified" suggestion and as soon as I select that option, all the icons scurry for the left side of the desktop and all is back to free for all.

This option does not have the desired effect.

Align to grid is on but we're not talking about subtle relocation when the "Modified" option is selected. It makes no difference on my XP Pro SP2 laptop whether "grid" is on or off. Selecting "modified" shoots all icons to the left most portion of the screen.

Which computer are we talking about here ?? Your laptop or the system of a client ???

Suppose we start over. Tell me what behavior the machine in question is exibiting and when it is doing this. Are the desktop icons scrambled all over the desktop, or are they arranged in neat rows on the left side of the screen before the shutdown and then rearranged in some other way on restart ??? Before and after screenshots might help.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

We're talking about the client's which has icons wherever he drags them. They remain in place until he shuts down and restarts.

On my laptop, I tested your comment about selecting "modified" to see if it was worth trying on the client laptop. The use of "modified" as you suggest was of no help. My icons which were moved out of place to see if they stayed put with the use of "modified", snapped back to the left and were not where I wanted them for the test nor were they "stuck" as you suggested they'd be in your earlier post to another person.

The use of modified on the client laptop resulted in the same unwanted behavior.

My laptop has only "align to grid" and "show desktop icons" checked and the icons behave quite fine as long as I do not use your suggestion of "modified".

The client has reported back that as of this afternoon, without any changes on his part, his icons are sticking put and he will report tomorrow after his evening shutdown.

It seems the definition of the "modified" option is a bit different from what I understand your suggestion to mean. MS says, "Arrange icons in the order that the shortcut was last modified." Since iet says "shortcut" singular, I understand that to mean oldest to newest or newest to oldest rather than any spatial or position layout, which might explain why the icons rearrange when I select that with align to grid also selected. If it said, "Shortcuts" last modified, I'd understand it to mean postion of all the shortcuts.
