Burning Boot CD's

I'm trying to (learn how to) burn a bootable CD.

The burn process went fine... but it won't boot... or at least not "auto start".

H:ExtractICOExtraico.exe is the file I want to auto start. "H" is my CD drive. My AUTORUN.INF is

[autorun]
open=EXTRAC~1Extraico.exe

I get no errors when I insert the CD, but nothing happens.

?

Chuck Billow

You sure do keep on keepin' on, dont'cha Chuck. Is this back on the topic of a Windows boot CD that you were wrestling with some time recently? What is the file you are trying to autorun and where did you get it. You need to give us a little more info on what it is you're trying to do. You can burn anything to a CD but whether or not it's a legitimate boot CD is another matter. There is a BIG difference between autorun and a boot CD.

Re: Burning Boot CD's

Al:

Yea, I'm back-dooring a boot cd...

I have BartPE, and it works (obviously) fine.

I've taken that ISO and added files to it, and that works.

Then I changed the file named in AUTORUN.INF file, and THAT worked.

THEN, I built a new image file and burned the CD (via Nero) from that.

The CD works (reads and executes the programs that are on it), so I wanted to add an AUTORUN.INF of my own. the pic shows the directory of the image file.

I changed the AUTORUN.INF file to:

[autorun]
open=quickpad.exe

IT works fine, starting up quickpad.exe on CD insert.

But if I change the AUTORUN to open=ExtractICOExtraico.exe, the prog doesn't start on insert. No error, but it won't run. It is a "standalone program", and runs fine from a CD if burned directly.

Gotta be something in my syntax, but I cannot see what.

Regards,
Chuck

First I wanted to just get the AUTORUN to work.

Well, I'm going to guess and say that the problem may be that you have accidentally omitted the letters "ct" from the file name:

ExtractICOExtraico.exe

Take another look at the .exe file name and see if the above shouldn't be:

ExtractICOExtractico.exe

Pilgrim:

I wish... but the exe file is actually ExtractICOExtraico.exe. That's a copied path...

Re: Burning Boot CD's

It must have something to do with long filenames, "~", or spaces, 'cause I just re-did it so the the AUTORUN.INF file now looks like:

[autorun]
open=Commandertotalcmd.exe

and it starts and runs fine...

Don't know, but it's working now...

Re: Burning Boot CD's

Does the term "boot" or "bootable" mean that you can start your computer from this CD without first booting Windows from the hard drive? If so, is there a particular recipe you followed for that?

Jefferson:

It's just BartPE, but a modified autorun entry so that Explorer/Total Commander (whatever) loads. I want to get rid of the BartPE menu in the lower left corner... that's still in the works... I should have it over the weekend.

I don't think I had ever heard of "BartPE" before. For future reference, the official site is here: Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD.

And it DOES work...

Now I'm tinkering with the plugins that allow customizing, and startup files (shells) is one.....
