    Re: iPod

From what I understand IPods are price fixed by Apple. Each model is the same price no matter where you would purchase it from. You may see some small difference in price, as a store may try to entice you in thru their doors, but I dont think you will see a huge savings from one location to another.

I could be, and often am, 100% wrong.

    Re: iPod

I believe Apple was the first to come out with them, but there are other companies making them now - from what I hear, but alas, like you I could be totally wrong!

    Re: iPod

As already noted, "iPod" is specific to Apple. Are you looking for iPods in particular, or for MP3 players in general?

ipod's are the "must have" because of brilliant marketing (and design I have to agree) but have you looked at alternatives like these http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/ they seem to be gaining on Apple and getting good reviews

    Re: iPod

The iPod's big sell feature (originally) was that you could rip your entire library of music to them, and not have to use the CDs again to listen to your music.

With the Shuffle in 512 MB, and 1 GB sizes, this is no longer the case. However, the mini, nano, and now video ipods have larger capacities that don't require the changing of library selections (too much).

I have the 6 GB ipod mini - I sync with various podcasts on a regular basis, and listen to it in the car, and at my desk. I love it, and purchased it because it syncs nicely with my linux boxes, rather than forcing me to use Windows or OSX.

    iPod

Deleted question restored by HansV - otherwise the thread is hard to follow.

Anyone have input on iPods - brand and type to get, cost and best buys? I need one for my daugher and need some wisdom on them. Thank you!

    Re: iPod

the only discounts i've seen on iPods were through my college or a company discount, neither specific to iPods but for Apple in general. I think its up to about 10% or so, but the actual saving on an iPod (namely the $400 one) was not that much (brought down to ~$385 -> 3.75%).

For general iPod info & prices, see: <post:=536,586>post 536,586</post:>

    Re: iPod

I've heard that children can be traumatized by not getting the name brands they want. What will their little friends think of them? So, if peer pressure is all it's cracked up to be, you might not really have any choice in the matter. But it certainly makes sense to shop around a bit and see what else is out there. One difficulty might be that most web sites and magazines directed toward gadget reviews and discussions seem to be pitched to the tastes of boys and young men. It might be a little tougher to find recommendations on audio players that your daughter's peers will think are just as cool (or even cooler) than Apple's iPod. Good luck!!

I appreciate your input. My daughter is 25 and married so I don't think the concerns you voiced would apply, but thank you anyway. I am going to look at Apple's web site.

Even quite elderly children demonstrate this obsession. Now excuse me while I caress my 4Gb Nano and mutter "My preciousssss, my preciousssss ..." <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>.
