    creating references (Word 2000)

I have a document that has several section (not Word sections, just different topics) each one labeled "Section " and the number. (Example: Section 1. Introduction) In the document I need to make references in some sections to previous sections (Example: "as defined in Section 3") Is there a way to link the numbered section in the text to the section that it refers to and have it automatically update as Sections are added or deleted? I tried Cross references, but when I changed the Heading from "Section 3" to "Section 2" either manually or by adding or deleting in a numbered heading, the Word Section would remain in the text but no number (Example: was "as defined in Section 3" changed to "section" with no number). Thanks

If you use outline numbering, cross references should work OK. See the attached document. At the moment, the cross reference in section 3 refers to section 2. If you delete section 1, and either update the cross reference field (F9) or print preview the document, the cross reference should refer to section 1.

This depends on how you are creating the paragraphs containing the text "Section 1" etc. The best way is to modify Heading 1 style so that it has the word Section and then a number. Do this by creating your headings as Heading 1 (without the word Section or the number) and then format Bullets and Numbers, chose a numbering scheme that looks reasonable to you and then Customise, and add the word Section before the number.

You can now Insert > Reference > Cross Reference > to a Heading
