Sorry about the subject line in my 1st message. Should read "My Computer". It's been a long day.

'My Computer' VERY slow (XP Media Center)

Hi all. I'm running Media Center on a high end Sony. When I click on My Computer, I get the flashlight, and it takes over 30 seconds to show the contents. All other directories are quick. I've turned off the option to search the network in files>view, and turned off indexing service. I also went through the services, but found nothing that seemed to be causing the problem. I've also run almost every reputable anti-virus, spyware, registry checker, etc., etc.

Additionally, when I plug a compact flash card into the built-in reader, it often doesn't recognize it, and other times it's very slow.

Although I'm running a wireless network, this computer plugs straight into the router. The other computers all seem fine. Can't seem to find the cause. I'd greatly appreciate anybody's input.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks, Hans. I've edited it, but don't know how to get rid of the 2nd post. It's not my day!

    Take care.

Do you have any file or device sharing setup? If you do Windows will still try to connect to the shares.

Also: In "My Computer" window click Tools | Folder Options, then View tab and uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers" checkbox. Click OK and close the window.

I turned that option off right away, but it made no difference. I'll just keep banging my head against the wall.

What do you mean turned off? If you turned the devices off that house the shared objects then Windows networking is waiting to hear from them. It takes quite a bit of time for it to give up.

Re: 'My Computer' VERY slow (XP Media Center)

Hi Joe. I didn't actually turn off the devices themselves. I turned off "sharing" in the properties, so that I no longer have shared printers or folders.

Another twist - when I go in to Windows in safe mode, the "My Computer" command is as fast as it should be. I'm going to have to go in and add things back one at a time to see what happens. Maybe it's just time to do a system restore (ugh) and start over.

    Thanks for your help.

Safe mode only loads a bare minimum of Windows components. In Windows Explorer (on the slow PC) do the shared folders show up under My Network Places? Did you map any drives to the shares?
