Re: Firefox 1.5 release

Tony, thanks for the thorough update. RC3 has been a great piece of software so far, and I'll be moving to the final release as soon as it's publicly available.

    Cheers!

    Re: Firefox 1.5 release

In your case there will be no need to update, after a period of extensive quality assurance testing Firefox 1.5 RC3 has been released as Firefox 1.5

For those that do not want to wait, the en-US version can be obtained directly from the Mozilla mirrors (following links connect to the primary mirrors in the USA)

    Windows: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/fir....5/win32/en-US/
    Linux: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/fir...nux-i686/en-US/
    Mac: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/fir.../1.5/mac/en-US/

    Firefox 1.5 release

(Edited by TonyE on 29-Nov-05 23:37. )
Firefox 1.5 is due to be released later today. At time of posting they are copying the files to the various mirrors with the official release being due sometime between 1200 & 1800 PST.

Update: Now officially released - Firefox 1.5 - Rediscover the web and Firefox international download

The following notes may be of use.

    Profiles
In Firefox the settings, extensions and themes are stored in profiles. Firefox 1.5 uses a different structure to the user profile than previous versions, and when Firefox 1.5 is first run it converts the profile to the 1.5 standard. Once converted the profile will no longer work with Firefox 1.0.x.

To be safe you should backup your profile (though or course you already do that, don't you?) You can also create a new profile if you want to start afresh.

For more information on profiles see Profile Folder - MozillaZine Knowledge Base, it includes links to the Profile Manager which is used to create new profiles, and how to migrate settings to a new profile.

    Menu spacing
One change that you may notice is when using the default theme, the spacing of the menus has increased slightly. This is due to the default theme changing from being based on Windows Classic to Windows XP/Luna. If you prefer the old spacing then you can either follow the procedure shown at Changing Firefox windows back to classic mode - MozillaZine Knowledge Base or install the Classic Menus extension

    Installing extensions and themes
In Firefox 1.0.x there is a setting called "Allow web sites to install software". This has been removed from the options dialog in Firefox 1.5 and replaced with another setting. If this value was unchecked in Firefox 1.0.x then you will not be able to install extensions and themes in Firefox 1.5 unless you change a hidden setting.
    1.
In the address bar type about:config

Locate the value xpinstall.enabled

Double click on it to change its value to true
For information on compatibility of extensions and themes see <post#=529,549>post 529,549</post#>

No need except that I want the version number in the "about" screen to be accurate!

I see what you mean about the menu spacing. A good opportunity to clean up the Bookmarks menu.
