MS Update: WGA validation tool KB905474 (Home/SP2)

Maybe not specific to XP, I don't know if this relates to other OS's, move to General Windows if so.

Today, after installing the Nov. 05-53 update, I went over to Microsoft Update to check the status. I did know that a few updates were left; Malicious Software Removal Tool, which I normally don't d/l. Then there is the old Win XP KB887742 (http.sys) that I haven't decided if I really need (and not really understand why it is priority update).

Then there was a new thing: Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool (KB905474) Published: 2005-11-29. No special information is given, only a link to the "WGA: Why Validate" site. This is obviously not an update to the ActiveX control, so what is it?

I do not find anything on the net or at MS sites.

Argus,
It is MS attempt to curtail pirated copies of Windows. It will validate that your copy is legit and if so will allow updates and patches to be downloaded.
If it's a pirate, it will not allow any further downloading.
Nothing to worry about as long as you have a purchased version.

Hi Bob!
Yes I do understand (at least think so) what the purpose is and what it probably will do if d/l, i.e. validate the OS copy. OK, but were does this fit in with the other WGA stuff already on the computer? First, I know that it may seem suspicious to even raise the question, but at least I must be allowed to ask what it does. I'm not pointing at you Bob, you are always helpful!

As I have mentioned in an earlier thread I have the WGA ActiveX control now working properly (problem was with the first install), and it is does what it is supposed to do, validates, and d/l's from MSFT works great. And MSFT has even released a plug-in to Mozilla browsers, which maybe could be useful. BUT WHY this update? How does it complement the IE add-in? I'm not worried the least, but if I don't want to d/l+install through MU, there is no alternative (yet), and I have to hied it to get rid of it from MU.

I have no clue either but I did notice that second "update" and just assumed that they found a problem with the first version and this was a fix? Maybe it was not validating all things properly? Who knows?
I D/L the second version just to keep them ( MS ) happy!

I think Bob is on the right track - it's just an updated version of the Validation tool. Remembering past updates, MS would regularly update the Office Update and the Windows Update controls with newer versions.

Second "update"? So you assume that this IS an update to the WGA ActiveX control? OK, I first (wrongly) thought that IF it is an update to the WGA ActiveX; why it isn

Hi Argus,
Yes, there was an update some time ago for "validation", then this one more recently.
Good luck on your updating project.

Shortly after the initial WGA ActiveX release there were many postings about how to get around it. I think that MS changed how it works (not ActiveX) and updates it regularly to keep the hackers busy. The reason WGA does not get updated automatically is that it is optional. Even if you choose not to use WGA you can still get security updates. You can't get optional updates and enhancements.

Joe and Bob,
Thanks for your replies. This one goes to Joe for a change.

Bob,
OK, I see. Maybe, I didn't get the original version when I installed the WGA control in October because I was late to jump on. Maybe the version I did get was their first updated, thus I didn't know about any first update etc. Thanks for wishing luck; think it will go all right. The fx was released in several languages directly, good for me (guess the small changes during RC's did help them translate in time). ZA seems to be OK to install. My, eventually, worry is the WMP10, but it resides ready together with updates in the d/l folder. I don't think that one will be a problem either. If so, I will come back for a search, or maybe a new thread.

Joe,
Thank you for information. Yes, it is optional (but I, as mentioned elsewhere, don't mind having it installed) and not needed for security updates. Many times I, after reading the security bulletins, use the link directly in the bulletin, and as you say these updates do not need validation.

I would like to add though, that before I installed the WGA control there was no way to use MU to check for security or any updates. Before proceeding I was prompted to install the WGA control and the Package Installer; there was no possibility to scan for security related updates. But of course the security updates were available elsewhere, e.g. via bulletin links, other pages etc. The MU, however, wouldn't proceed before WGA and Package Installer.

As for this update, Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool (KB905474), information could be better from MS.

John,
Yep, I can understand the need for updates to these different controls, WU, MU, OU and also the WGA control. But the information could be a bit better.

Re: MS Update: WGA validation tool KB905474 (Home/

After some other work I went back to Microsoft Update just to look. I have IE set to prompt for the ActiveX and script things (in trusted zone, totally disabled otherwise) and like it so. As I loaded the MU page there were the usual prompts and I clicked Yes. I then did a scan for updates with the "quick install" or what it's called in English version.

Now what! The KB905474 update is gone! I headed over to Explorer and the "Downloaded Program Files" folder. The WGA tool version is now 1.4.389.0, I did check it before my first post in this thread and I don't remember exactly but I think the version then was 1.4.385 or something else. Did a quick search for files changed today, and yes, at the time I went to MU this last time there are changes to "C:WINDOWSSoftwareDistribution" files and folders; Muauth.cab etc. Also the wpa.dbl.

So it seems I got the update somehow. Either there was one extra prompt that I clicked yes to (don't think so), or it updated itself since it already was there, or maybe MS has pulled the update from MU site (don't think so!).

Anyhow, I just wanted to give an update(!), for what it's worth, to other reading.

The inability to use WU/MU is just Microsoft's 'gentle' way of getting everyone to use WGA.
