String Functions in Word Fields? (Word 2002)

I'd like to get only part of a filename to display in a Word filename field. Is it possible to use string functions to achieve this, for example displaying only the first five characters of the filename? Or characters 7 through 10, etc.? Is something along the lines of {Mid (Filename, 7,4)} possible in a field?

Word does not have any string manipulation functions for use in fields, unfortunately.

Thanks Hans, that's what I suspected. Seems that you can do quite sophisticated numerical calculations within a field, but no string manipulation capabilities exist. What I'm thinking of now is to use a macro to put the truncated filename data into a custom document property, which could then be referenced in a field. This is becoming more work than I was looking forward to.

It's a pity - you'd think it shouldn't be that difficult to make string functions available, since fields already "know" how to deal with formulas and functions...
