Non-breaking spaces

I'm using Word 2000 with NT 4.0 as my OS. I'm also using SoftWise Numbering to modify the heading styles to include paragraph numbering. When I want to embed a paragraph number within a paragraph, I'm using the Listnum field. I have noticed that if the Listnum field comes at the end of a line and I want to keep it with the word that follows, inserting a non-breaking space doesn't do the trick. Has anybody run into this before, and do you have any ideas on the subject? Thanks.

Re: Non-breaking spaces

Did you get an answer for this post? I am having the same problem and checked here to see if I could find an answer. I am using Word 2000 SR/1 on Win ME.

Thanks,

Re: Non-breaking spaces

Just a note to say that I am able to duplicate this problem, although I have never run into it because I use the numbers at the beginning of paragraphs, not in mid-paragraph. I can think of occasions when using them mid-paragraph might be used, though.

I guess my preference is to do numbering in a list fashion rather than (1) following within a (a) paragraph or ( sentence and (2) being confusing. However, I know that our statutes are written this way.

Written my preferred way, the above would read:

I guess my preference is to do numbering in a list fashion rather than
(1) following within a
(a) paragraph or
( sentence and
(2) being confusing.
However, I know that our statutes are written this way.

My preferred way is almost certainly not proper English. I guess I prefer to use a little extra screen real estate or paper and ignore the proprieties in search of clarity.

Sorry not more help.

Hi,

Can't remember where I saw it this discussed before (it may not have been here), but the upshot is that unfortunately there is no way to make the listnum 'stick'.

Re: Non-breaking spaces

Actually, my experience with the listnum field has been that if you use it within a paragraph to which a numbered heading style has been applied, it sticks just fine. I have seen some problems with it in a non-heading style paragraph. But that wasn't my original question, which had to do with non-breaking spaces not working after a listnum field at the end of a line.

Charles, I certainly agree with your point about not wanting to embed heading numbers within paragraphs. However, I just can't get those darned lawyers to agree with me.

Amen, Lee!

They want what they want when they want it.
Many thanks to all.

Re: Non-breaking spaces

Sorry Lee - I was a bit lazy in my description - by 'sticks' I was referring to non-breaking spaces i.e. you can't get a non-breaking space to force the listnum at the end of the line to stick to the text that follows...
