Connection problems (6.0)

I somehow committed a "mouse fumble" when OE was loading, and possibly right-clicked on something, then the whole O/S froze up. After a reboot I find that I can neither send nor receive, with error messages like:

The host could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: , Server: , Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

and

Check for new messages on 'Alan Business'. Failed Local Area Network

I still have connectivity to the server from another mail program, and can still use the webmail facility. As far as I can tell, all of my account(s) settings are correct and the same as for my (functioning) independent mail program. I am on broadband, and the Local Area Network "Connection" setting above does not ring a bell... or maybe I never noticed it before.

Any suggestions as to where to look/ what to check?

Alan,
Have you gone into the network connections settings in Control Panel?
I am also on broadband service and there are two mentioned as per the screenshot.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
Today it is called golf!

Well, well... after much muttering and gnashing of teeth, How to troubleshoot error messages that you receive when try to send and receive e-mail in Outlook and in Outlook Express steered me to checking my firewall settings. Somehow, OE had become a blocked application. Go figure ????
