    Labels & postal barcodes (Word 2002 SP3)

    I have merged an address book from Works (.wdb) to Word for the purpose of printing labels- Christmas time, you know. The merge was OK. I can print the labels, but don't see a way to include barcodes, unless I print labels one at a time and select postal code. Is there a way to print my pages of labels, all different, with postal barcodes?

    The US English version of Word should support insertion of bar codes. You can also insert them as follows:
    When you've created one label, click in the position where you want the bar code.
    Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field brackets { } (don't type them yourself!)
    Type the word BARCODE followed by a space.
    Press Ctrl+F9 again to insert another pair of field brackets.
    Type the word MERGEFIELD followed by a space and the name of the Zipcode field in your Works file.
    It should look like this (with the correct field name substituted):
    { BARCODE { MERGEFIELD Zip } }
    Press F9 to hide the field codes and update the field.
    Finally click Update all labels in the Mail Merge task pane or Propagate Labels on the Mail Merge toolbar.

    One other question for Hans or any contributor and that is- In this Word document that has a page or more on labels, is there a way to print only part of the labels on a page and/or to skip a label space?

    Could you explain in detail what you want to accomplish?

    This doesn't happen often, but suppose I have a sheet of Avery labels and the first three had been used the last time I printed labels and now I want to start printing on row 2, column 2. Most label programs will let you do that. Or maybe only one label had been used. I could turn the sheet so that the used label was last. Now I'd only like to print 13 labels on a 14 label sheet.

    As far as I know, there is no built-in support for this. You could clear the appropriate labels in the merge document, and merge only one page, then close the merge document without closing, then reopen it and merge the rest (the merge dialog lets you specify which records you want to merge)

    OK. That sounds workable. In the instance I cited where the first 3 labels on the sheet have been used, would I go to the addressw book I'm merging from, add 3 rows to the beginning of the address book which makes them blank, then merge?

    That would probably be easier than manipulating the merge document. If you want to skip a label somewhere else on the page, you could insert a row in the appropriate place in the address book.

    OK, that sounds reasonable.
