database engine could not lock (xp)

"the database engine could not lock table switchboard items because it is already in use by another person or process" when a user opens to the switchboard screen - any ideas. .this is a really simple database.. there was no splitting ect.

    Thank you in advance.

Quit Access, then see if there is a file with the same name as the database and in the same folder as the database but with extension .ldb. If so, try to delete the .ldb file.
Otherwise, try to compact the database (Tools | Database Utilities | Compact and Repair Database...)
If that doesn't work, the database may be corrupt. Create a blank new database and try to import all database objects from the problem database. You'll have to set startup options and non-standard VBA references (if any) anew.

    Thank you.
I ended up exporting all but one report to another Database. Recreated the switchboard and all seems to be fine.

    Thank you again.
