I just was reading their newsletter that announced the demise of the free program. Well, I'll just remove it and do without, other programs I use perform almost the same function. I was plaining on posting the news, I see you beat me to it.

<hr>Well, I'll just remove it and do without, other programs I use perform almost the same function.<hr>And why in the world would you remove a fully functional program just because it isn't going to be available for free any longer? I've got several "out-dated" applications which continue to do perfectly well what they were designed to do. Just because they are no longer being developed or offered for free doesn't change how the program works. <IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/giggle.gif>

If updates weren't needed, they why would programs keep providing them. If you use outdated programs, you're not keeping up with the latest means available to perform the actions you need.
Do you think people who still use Windows 95 have a program fully capable of performing tasks as users of Windows XP or 2000?
Of course, that's just my humble opinion.

There is a vast difference between an O/S and a program that simply retrieves information about items which are installed, e.g., software and hardware. The upgrades that Lavasys provided simply added the ability to retrieve more information and/or more detailed information. Being able to retrieve information about an installed modem, video card, processor or to display the current temperature of the motherboard isn't affected because the application is free, purchased or if it is 5 years old. The information is still the same.
Hey, if you want to remove the program from your PC you certainly are at liberty to do so. But your stated reason for doing so simply isn't logical, IMHO. Personally, Everest will continue to be used on my own PC as well as every other PC I install it on where I need to retrieve necessary information and it will do everything expected even if Lavasys, as a company, should go bankrupt. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

You make a valid case for keeping the program, but I wonder if it would not be best to use another free program that regularly is updated to do more, and perhaps perform faster? Why use something old and out-od-date when you can use something that grows better with every update?
We can go round and round about this issue, one that no winner will be determined. It's like you stated and me too, that it's a matter of personal preference.

Until one finds a better program the current one would be better than none at all.
Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I give up, you guys have ganged up me. I bow to the concensus of opinion of my betters (computer wise only).

You just had to mention that thing again, didn't you? I still say, if I install it, I'll expect you to come here and fix what's broken. Agree to that and I'll get it tomorrow.

I am running Everest ver. 1.51. It works great. When I checked the 2.01 version some months ago I found that they had removed some information modules, if I remember correct, so I uninstalled it.
The only thing I can imagine will be a problem is in the future when new hardware technology is introduced, then an old program may not be able to recognize all hardware. Until then: no problem.
At this rate of decompatability, I expect you to be back to Windows 3.1 in no time flat. There is lots of help available here, provided you're willing to take the plunge into Windows 3.11. Good luck.

Thanks Argus,
After all this back and forth conversations, I just discovered that I have removed Everest 2.01. For the life of me, I can't remember why. That makes this topic moot, doesn't it?
<img src=/S/coffeetime.gif border=0 alt=coffeetime width=32 height=48>
No thanks Alan,
I'll stick to Windows XP until it is no more. I began my Windows experience with Windows 95, graduated to 98 and then 98 SE. It's much too late to start learning another operating system.
