    Word Merge (2003/ ???)

    I setup a mail merge with Word 2003 using a table from a Word 2000 document. I have always saved the merge document before the merge is actually preformed and then if more names are added to the table later the merge document has always been able to access that table and create a new document with all the necessary information.

    I don

    You don't need to create any data sources in order to connect to a Word document. Just browse to the .doc file, select it and click Open.

    Re: Word Merge (2003/ ???)

    Hans,

    That is exactly what I did and it would not open it, said it couldn't find it except when I first created the merge file and told it where the data was. It opened (accessed) it fine then. I didn't think it needed an association but I couldn't figure out any reason why it wouldn't find and use it. So I thought perhaps, maybe something was missing.

    The problem still exists that it will not use the Word document unless I create a new merge file each time. However, it will use the Excel file where the data is stored time after time just as it previously did with the Word table file. Any idea why this would be happening?

    Thanks.

    Thanks Hans. I don't have any idea either. I have never before encountered anything like this. Hopefully someone has a solution.

    Re: Word Merge (2003/ ???)

    Can WINWORD.EXE be registered with Windows like I once had to do with Excel? Following Hans link in another forum I used "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Regserver. Can WINWORD.EXE be substituted for Excel.exe without causing any problems?

    Thanks.

    Hans,

    Thank you. When I get to that machine again I think I'll give it a try. I can't think of anything else to try.

    Re: Word Merge (2003/ ???)

    The default path for Office 2003 is ...Office11, and the switch for Word is /r, so you'd get
    <code>
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice11Winword.exe" /r
    </code>
    According to How to use startup command line switches to start Word 2003, Word 2002, and Word 2000, this switch "Starts Word in the background, makes changes in the Windows registry, and then quits. This switch forces a re-register of Word in the Windows registry."

    Re: Word Merge (2003/ ???)

    We are having similar problems with recent conversions to 2003. One of the users has a main document and a data source (both in Word) before his conversion, he would update the data, save and close. Then open the main document and just hit the "merge to new document" icon. Now when he opens the main doc the mail merge toolbar is grey. It seems like word forgets the data file even though the data fields are in the main document. I have now seen this on 4 machines across campus (all recent conversions or new setups) the rest of the campus has been converted for over a year. We tried the sql registry update which helped the sql messages we were getting but still does not help with the problem of having to reconnect the main doc with the data source every time.

    Any ideas??

    This is no real help but I have seen the same thing a number of times when converting to 2003. It does seem though, that you only have to point to the new data file once, and from there on in it remembers it.

    Re: Word Merge (2003/ ???)

    Karen,

    That was not the case with me. It never did remember a Word document as the source for data. It did remember an Excel spreadsheet after I put all the data into one.

    Melanie,

    Unfortunately there hasn't been any thing I have tried that was successful and I haven't seen any suggestions to help remedy the problem.

    (Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

    Found a fix! Tried on two machines and worked fine. Refer to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840936

    Method #1 worked for us
