    Strange files

While rummaging around in WE, I noticed these four files in my C root folder. Any idea what they might be?
Looking at their properties has not revealed any clue at all and the dates are recent.
    4k in size each.

These files are probably created by one of Norton utilities (as Go Back). Which Norton program did you install?

    Re: Strange files

I haven't recently installed ANY Norton products.
I DO have Systemworks 2005 installed ( almost a year ago ) but haven't noticed these files until very recently.
I don't use GoBack at all.

i may just try renaming them temporarily to see what the effect is, if any.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed them in their root folder?

    Re: Strange files

    Hi Stuart,
I really don't think they are Norton files.

I went ahead and renamed them as mentioned above. I ran Systemworks and most of it's features and didn't see any problems. Time will tell, I suppose.

Meanwhile, if anyone else spots them, please let meus know.

    Re: Strange files

There's a reference in this forum Bob, but not much information. I agree that the Volume {xxxx} does look like it has something to do with System Restore.

If you drag one into Notepad, can you see anything recognisable?

    Re: Strange files

    John,
I don't think it is SR but that link did give some possibilities. I CAN rename or delete them. I tried with the back up copies OK.

I THINK further down in the link it mentioned System Mechanic files left over from the latest version 6.
I do use SM but version 5.5. I tried version 6 but didn't think it was ready for prime time yet, so I deleted version 6. MAYBE that's what they are?

I will have to see if any new dates are stamped on the files or if they are regenerated by something else.
    ?????
Right now they are renamed with a # sign in front of the name. I use that to identify files or folders that are candidates for deletion.
