    Pasted image is cropped (WordXP)

I was wondering why when I paste an image into a document, the image is often made smaller. I use "Paste Special" as "Bitmap" or "Picture". For example, the borders (or parts of) of the picture are sometimes missing. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

What is the source? Is it a file on disk, a file copied from the web browser, a file copied from an open graphics editor? Possibly Word and the source are not communicating properly... Saving to disk and using Insert>Picture>From file might be more reliable.

As for size, Word will of course try to fit anything you paste inside the margins, so anything wider than 6" or whatever your document body width is will automatically be scaled down to fit. Insert>Picture>From file does the same thing. Added: In my experience, this does not crop the image, just shrinks it uniformly, but I generally use Insert>Picture>From file.

The pasted image may not actually be cropped. By fiddling around, I've managed to paste images into text boxes and frames when I didn't think I was doing so.

If you try to paste a picture into a text box or frame you might run into problems if the margin window of the encapsulating box or frame may be smaller than the image's dimensions. The whole image is there, but you only see the part within the text box/frame's window. You can tell if the image is in a box if when you click on the image, the available margin white area on the vertical or horizontal rulers is smaller than it is when you click elsewhere on the page. If it is in a box, either remove the text box or frame, or drag the box's margins large enough to display the whole image.

The source of the image was from a Word document. I think that the original image was pasted into the document using Ctrl + V (Paste). Therefore, it was probably converted to HTML. When I pasted this into my Word document, some of the image was lost.

Is there a good resource somewhere that explains how Word handles images?

I think I've picked up what I know from trial and error, and the Lounge. I'm not sure there is any authoritative source on all the ins and outs, not to mention the changes from one version of Word to the next!

Do you still have access to the original Word document? If so, open it, select the picture and use the Reset button in the Format Picture dialog and see whether that recovers any missing or invisible portions of the picture. If that works, select the picture in the old document, copy, and then paste into the new document. This might give better results than the convertion to HTML.
