    Running Balance (2003/any)

I was asked if I could come up with a formula that would calculate a running balance for any given account number. For testing purposes, I created a single workbook containing two sheets (this is based loosely upon the file where the balance calc will be eventually be used); one sheet lists the specific account numbers and the previous months year to date balance for each of these account numbers, the other sheet contains the current month

    Try the following in D2:

    =VLOOKUP(C2,YTD_Nov!$A$2:$B$17,2,0)-SUMIF($C$2:C2,C2,$B$2:B2)

and fill down as far as needed. The formula ALWAYS looks up the previous month's balance for the account, and subtracts the sum of all purchase order amounts for that account up to and including the one in the current row.
