Make my own ring tone?

I know plenty of people - ok, way too many people - who have not only a favorite song that plays as the ring tone for their cellphone - but more and more are assigning multiple unique for several different individuals so they know who is calling without having to look. I'm curious if there is software floating around out there somewhere that I could use to do this - I always have trouble identifying my cellphone when it rings and I have a specific bit of music in mind I'd like to use.
In case it matters my cellphone is a Motorola and my service is Verizon.

It's usually a phone-specific thing, and will vary from model to model (not just manufacturer). The Motorola website has downloads and something called the "MotoLounge" which may be a good starting point.

...I always have trouble identifying my cellphone when it rings...

I had to smile when I read that, for it's the reason I long ago decided to "dedicate" my shirt pocket to my mobile phone and set the phone on vibrate rather than ring. I can feel it against my chest AND I don't see people in the vicinity scurrying around to see if it's THEIR phone that's ringing, as often happens. Back on your topic, boy, there sure are some interesting ring tones out there these days!

I saw some programs at Fry's Electronics for this, they were part of a big day-after-Thanksgiving sale. Maybe they were Ringtone Media Studio and/or Magix Ringtone Maker? They claimed to be able to convert music or whatever to the correct format and send it to your phone (by text message, I assume). I have no idea whether they really work.

Re: Make my own ring tone?

    Al,

The phone, to be truthful, is only about a week old - but I was out doing some Christmas shopping a few days ago when my wife called me. I had the radio on and the DJ was talking, and I found it unprofessional that he would have his cellphone on in the studio, because I could hear it ringing. Then he put on a song and the phone was still ringing, so I finally realized it was my cellphone ringing - it was the first time I heard it ring and had no clue it was mine.
Deep down within the Motorola website I found a reference to some software applet I can download that would convert a sound file to a type that could be uploaded to my phone. But right now the network at work is SO slow it's like using a 486 - no exaggeration! Everyone around me has been having the same problem for the past week or so. Progress - go figure.

Perhaps FutureDial's software is compatible with your make of phone...? For my own purposes I use an open source program called BitPim but it is only compatible with a limited number of handsets.

Re: Make my own ring tone?

Sorry about taking so long to respond - I decided to finally build my new PC over the Christmas holiday and ran into several problems - I'm still getting back to speed.

The phone I have is a Motorola E815. Unfortunately, neither product you suggested, Mark, does what I want for my model phone. Thanks for the suggestions though - I'll check back there periodically to see if they've changed at all. BitPim, ironically, does support the cheapie unit I got my wife because she is always afraid to try to do anthing besides call and answer. sigh

Check out Coding Workshop Ringtone Software.. They have two programs for ringtones. Both support many phones and are relatively inexpensive.

In my experience most new phones will come with a suite of software that you can install on you PC and then use to create ring tones.

Alternatively if the phone can play mp3's you can use these as a ring tone as well (you will need the correct cable though to connect it to your PC so you can copy them across).

    hope this helps
