Hyperlinks in HTML Messages (Outlook 2000 SP3)

I normally create new emails in plain text format. If I want to include a hyperlink, I tend to open the website, block the address in the address bar (in IE) and right click | copy. Move back into my email text, right click and paste. And lo and behold, my message now includes a single-clickable hyperlink for the recipients' convenience!

    So what is my problem?

Well, why when I am creating an email in HTML format (either from scratch, or by replying to a message which has arrived in my in-box in that format) does this not work - ie. I can copy in my hyperlink, but it is not clickable?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Neil

See if the thread starting at <post:=365,927>post 365,927</post:> helps.

    Thanks Hans.

I have reviewed this thread, but it doesn' t seem to help my case.

That poster was referring to hyperlinks which launched IE, but didn' t then go to the website.

My hyperlinks (in HTML formatted e-mails) don't even launch IE.

(I have tried some of the remedies mentioned in the thread, but these haven't helped).

And when my mouse passes over the hyperlink, it doesn't turn into a hand symbol, as it would with a "functional" hyperlink.

    Any other ideas?

    Neil

Do the URLs look like hyperlinks (i.e. blue and underlined) or do they look the same as the surrounding text?

They look like hyperlinks - coloured (plum colour actually, though the ones I create in plain text emails are blue!) and auto-underlined.

The 'plum' colour is the usual default colour for visited web addresses (see your IE options) so is probably not significant.

Are you trying these links on emails you are sending or receiving? I don't think the hyperlink works on emails that have not been sent.

    That is the answer!!!

    Thank you Leif (and Hans)

For some reason I tended to check that the hyperlink I was sending someone actually successfully launched the site I was directing them to, by clicking on it in the draft e-mail (prior to sending).

This works with a draft in Plain Text, but not (as I described above) in an HTML draft.

But I've just sent an HTML email to myself, complete with (apparently) non-functioning hyperlink, and when it arrived back, the hyperlink worked!

    Thanks again

Aha! I had been following the thread a bit perplexed, but Leif explained it.

So here's a simple trick - to test the hyperlink in an unsent message, just select File | Save, your message will be saved as a Draft, close the message, find it in your Drafts folder, then test the hyperlink. HTH.

That doesn't work for me (2002)

Admittedly, I don't use the Drafts folder - saved messages are saved in my Inbox where I'll see them! I can't imagine saving to Drafts would make any difference, but the only workround for HTML that I can see is:

Save the message (but don't close it)
    Format > Plain Text
    Test the link(s)
    Close without saving
    Re-open the saved original.

    Oops, you are correct. <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30> I'm a mandatory plaintexter, and didn't test HTML or RTF formatted messages.
