Word 2000, Excel Mail Merge Problem

I am trying to create a Mail Merge Document with a Word 2000 document. When trying to open an Excel 2000 database I receive the following error message:

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module MSO9.DLL at 0167:30a85bf1.

This happens on at least 2 Dell machines I have purchased, running Windows 98 (all Software pre-installed). Of course I've had them over a year and this is the first time I've tried to use the feature. I've tried the software repair, with no effect. Is there a glitch that I can't find documented? I have an older maching running NT and the '97 versions of Word and Excel and everything works great merging the Excel Spreadhsheet into the Work documents.

Try the updates mentioned at KB Article Q245021. Although not specifically mentioned in the manner you describe there are very similar errors occuring (including that driver error in Excel... and other apps). Since the software was preloaded at Dell over a year ago, chances are the updates weren't implemented.

Good luck!

P.S. If you do decided to go the update route -- do not install Service Release 2.

Hi THam,

If the SR1 patch doesn't take care of it, this could just be a matter of Word encountering a rouge temp file. Leftover temp files can cause all sorts of strange errors.

Search for all temp (*.tmp) and twiddle (~$*.do?) files and delete those you find.
