Balloons

    Hi,

I've lost the little yellow balloons that pop up over icons, like make a new post or reply, print, etc. And in Controls, the heads and other icons. Something I did? How do I get them back? I don't see anything about balloons in FAQ or Help.

Is this just in the Lounge, or in all websites?

    Re: Balloons

I went to a few of my favorites and couldn't find, right offhand, any other sites with balloons or with stand-alone icons which would require a balloon. Looked in tools/options to see if something needed checked. Looked in Woody's XP books but the word "balloon" was not in the indexes. Went to MS Help and Support Center, but no balloon word there either. There are balloons on the XP toolbars and tray, IE, and other MS programs. Stuck. Any ideas?

For instance, if you go to Google and hover the mouse over the Google logo, do you see a tooltip?

    Re: Balloons

These might be called "screen tips" or "tooltips" instead of balloons. But I didn't think there was a way to turn them off in IE.

    Re: Balloons

From the IE Tools menu, click on "Internet Options". Under the "Advanced" tab, look in the "Accessibility" section (top of the list); make sure "Always expand ALT text for images" is checked.

The Lounge doesn't have an option to toggle the tooltips/alt text - it's very probably a browser-specific issue. (Answering Hans' question in <post:=541,179>post 541,179</post:> will confirm this one way or the other)

    Re: Balloons

Hans, I do not see the tooltip under the Google logo, however if I hold down the left mouse button and pass it around under the logo, a single-space black vertical bar appears. It looks like a single highlighted space.

Waggers, I've checked the "always expand" option, closed and re-opened IE, and there are no changes.

I've looked in the various Helps and Woody's XP books for "tooltips" and "screentips" and have not found any references. I used to have these tooltips. I've been dutifully downloading all of the MS updates and have not installed any major programming except NAV2006. One of those updates may have done me in, but surely everybody else has installed the same updates.

    Re: Balloons

I don't know a solution, but I'll move this thread to the Internet Explorer forum. It has turned out not to be specific to the Lounge, and perhaps someone there will have a suggestion.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 13-Dec-05 12:56. )
Edit: I re-read your earlier post and it sounds as though the problem is limited to web pages and not the Windows interface. Therefore, never mind the following.

Do you get tooltips for the icons in the system tray (adjacent to the clock at the end of the taskbar) AKA as the notification area? If not perhaps it is a Windows setting. Apparently you can set "EnableBalloonTips" to false to hide those tooltips (see HOW TO: Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips in Windows XP).

It might also make sense to check the Display control panel (e.g., right-click your desktop, Properties), Appearance tab, Advanced button. If you change the Item drop-down to Tooltip, is there anything strange there? Tiny font, black-on-black, etc.?

Finally, I woudn't rule out a bad update to the display drivers. Sometimes the hardware updates available from Microsoft are not the best match for your hardware. You can use the Device Manager to "roll back" any updates, or you can visit the OEM site (computer manufacturer) for updated display drivers.[/list]

    Hans,

I believe this is specific to the Lounge. I get no tips on any object in the Lounge. Other sites are OK. I had been blaming it on my running IE 7 beta 1 but guess it is not that. Couldn't tell you when it stopped working.

I get tooltips in the Lounge in both Internet Explorer 6 and in FireFox 1.5. I don't have Internet Explorer 7 Beta.

    Re: Balloons

Hey, I finally got the tooltip to show on the Google logo. I held down the left mouse button while passing it over the logo, and that makes the tooltip show up. With everything else on other sites (as well as the Lounge icons) though, the left button just causes highlights.

I did install a new Memorex MX4210 optical mouse a month or so ago. XP seemed to find a driver and it seems to work, however Control Panel/mouse still thinks it is a Microsoft mouse. There was no driver with it and the Memorex site does not have one to download. Guess I could switch back to my old mouse just to see if the tooltips reappear. What do you think?
