    Autorun

    I am creating a CD, that will have some pdf,xls,doc, ppt kpeg files on it. I want the CD to open in pdf. I googled autorun, and came up with several programs to do this, but they all want you to purchase their respective products. I think what I have here will do what I want, Will it?
    [autorun]
    open=Adobe.exe
    icon=Autorun.exe
    Thanks John

    Do you, by any chance, know if it works with USB Flash Drives?

    <IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/Dunno4.gif> Sorry, I've only used Karen's program with CD's. My flash drive "autoPLAYs" automatically when it is connected. Perhaps you are confusing "autoRUN" with "autoPLAY"?

    Maybe you could try APO USB Autorun -

    "enables you to add autorun functionality to your USB drive. It automatically searches for the standard autorun.inf (as used with CDs) and executes it. This simple, but very handy functionality allows you to create an autorun menus in the same way you would for a CD and use it with your USB drive, or launch playlists, html pages and any other type of file as soon as the USB drive is inserted. In addition to the autorun functionality, the program also allows you to quickly access the files on the USB drive(s) from the tray icon menu. I'm not sure what I mean! I suspect it may be also be down to whether or not the end user has selected a default action in the "Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file:" pop-up window.

    Re: Autorun

    Thanks Alan, but my reading of the description
    <hr> APO Usb autorun is a small tool that detects usb drives connection. It searches for autorun.inf file and executes it if found.<hr>
    makes me believe you need to have the prgram installed before you insert the drive.

    I am looking for something that would - for example - load an HTML page on the drive when it was inserted in any pc.

    Re: Autorun

    From the little I've read about this, you need a way to flash the firmware in the USB drive, so that it can fool Windows into believing that it is a non-removable device e.g. IDE ROM. There's some info on Creating an AutoRun-Enabled Application (Windows Explorer and Controls) but I don't know if it's of any help.

    Re: Autorun

    Yep..... your screenshot shows what you want/need to enable so that the respective drive will "AutoPLAY". AutoRUN generally refers to a program and/or action that is performed when a disk is inserted into a removeable media drive, e.g., CD/CD-RW/DVD, etc. Unfortunately, the two terms: "autorun" and "autoplay" are sometimes used interchangeably which creates confusion. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    Okay.... evidently, you are NOT interested in having all the files displayed in a Windows Explorer window (autoplay) when the drive is connected. But rather, you want a specifid FILE to open (autorun) when the drive is connected. In that case, again.... Karen's "Autorun.inf" utility should provide you with what you want to do. Admittedly, I have not tried this with a USB drive, so I cannot confirm that it will actually work. A quick note to Karen would confirm it it would. I can tell you that I have done exactly this on a CD which when inserted opens an HTML page. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Autorun

    Thanks for your research but I don't think I'm going to spend too long looking for a solution - the end usage doesn't warrant it.
    An interesting article though - but it does state "Autorun.inf files are not supported under Microsoft Windows XP for drives that return DRIVE_REMOVABLE from GetDriveType" - I gave it a quick try without success.

    Re: Autorun

    Thanks Jeff - I'll certainly give it a look. This is for promotional give-aways so will have a limited lifespan, hence my disinclination to spend too time on it. I fully expect out customers to copy the info on the drive to their PC then 'recycle' it for their own use.

    Re: Autorun

    Yep <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> I presume that's what the firmware hack/ flash is supposed to trick - getting the drive to return "I'm a CD player... really. You've just got to believe me!" rather than "DRIVE_REMOVABLE".
