Spy Sweeper and slowdown in IE

Just a heads up for those who might be using a current version of Spy Sweeper and have noticed a slowdown in IE screen loads.

I am using a current version of Spy Sweeper under WXP Pro - SP2 and during the last week or so have experienced painstaking slowness when IE is trying to load. It can take 20 - 25 seconds before the screen is loaded. If attempting to go to another site, the new screen also takes 20 - 25 seconds before it appears. No other applications are affected.

At first, I did not know which application might be causing the slowdown. I turned off several applications and it was only when SS was turned off that the loading speed returned to normal. With all applications loaded, I reloaded SS and started to play with the different options within SS. I discovered that activating the "Active X" Shield under the Windows System tab caused the problem. I have now turned that particular option off and filed a incident report with Webroot. I'll report back when I hear from them.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

    Bob,
You're absolutely right about the slowdown. As an ardent supporter of SpySweeper -- who uses Firefox -- I hadn't noticed. I will now advise my customers who use IE 6 and SpySweeper to be patient. All the more reason for them to switch to Firefox! Please keep us posted as to your response from WebRoot. Thanks again.

Liberty, just a fast update. As of this writing, the incident ticket is still in "open" status with no response from Webroot. I'll report back when there is a response.

Liberty, still no word from Webroot. However, there was an update to SpySweeper released this morning. The problem still exists.

    Hey Mark,

My first observation is that it's about time you put on your hat!!! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

WGT Firefox... I did try it a few months back and found that 1) it wouldn't allow me to log into my banking facility, 2) it seemed that everything I wanted to do I had to load add-ons and 3) some of my apps, like Windows Washer, did not support FF.

Well, being a retiree who likes to watch his banking data on a daily basis, disappointment 1) was reason enough to unload FF and return to IE. I do realize that FF has gained wider acceptance and that many of my previous concerns have been addressed. However, IE has served me well over the years and a little "glitch" caused by SpySweeper is not reason enough to jump ship. Besides, IE7 is on the horizon and I might as well wait and see what it has to offer.

Anyway, to each his own and I promise not to fire off e-mails when FF grows to the point where hackers start upsetting the code. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

Re: Spy Sweeper and slowdown in IE

    Hi Liberty;

I received an e-mail from Webroot last night and they suggested I call into their 1-866 hotline to get the answer to the IE loading issue.

I called them this morning and their tech support indicated that the newest release of Java and its integration with IE is causing the slow down in Spy Sweeper. Webroot became aware of the problem in the last week or two and their development team is working on a solution. The tech support rep's suggestion was to do what I did, that is, leave the Active X shield turned off. They expect to have an update to Spy Sweeper shortly that will resolve the issue.

I usually check for updates on a daily basis and will report back when a release is issued that resolves the problem.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

Thanks, Bob. In the meantime, why don't you switch to Firefox, and be done with IE 6? <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23>
