Corrupted Setup file (XP Pro)

Just starting my preliminary install and receive a message that the file Dac2w2k.sys is corrupted and setup will be aborted. I notice this file is in a compressed format as Dac2w2k.sy_ on the installation disk. Is it possible to make up a new CD, using this file from an existing installation? I fear that the only copy of this CD held by my department is faulty, and it will probably take them until about 2010 (if ever) to get a replacement.

    Yes, IF:

You make certain that you obtain the same version of the file, which could have changed with service packs or hotfixes
You compress the file so that it has exactly the same name, using MAKECAB.EXE which will be found in your working XP installation.[/list]

Thanks Mark. I'll be able to give that a try in an hour or so, and hopefully report back. The files on the CD they gave me are dated 23/8/01 - I guess (hope) they expand with the same date, so I can use that as a version check. I was also given the SP2 CD to use, but I guess that's no use until I have a working installation anyway?

The dates are not as important as the actual file verion. You should be able to right-click on the expanded file and find out which version it is (under properties). Your SP2 CD is indeed of little use unless you choose to integrate it into the base installation before trying again - which, coincidentally, may solve the problem too.

[grumble][grumble]... I tried to locate this file on several boxes, but no joy. It is a Mylex (Raid) DAC1164P Disk Array Controller, so it's quite possible that it isn't relevant to any of the hardware I looked at. In view of the difficulties I've had with the department's (excuse for an) IT section, I may well have to try this integrated installation approach you mention. I've asked about its viability before, using a 98 O/S to actually produce the slipstreamed CD. I'll reperuse those posts, then probably need to come back on it. [grumble][grumble]

So this is happening when booting from CD, before you get to the EULA? If so, you can probably find the Mylex driver and replace it that way...

Yep, this happens before the EULA appears. I've looked at various downloads for the driver, but as you said, it's a matter of getting the version right... then compressing it. All the available downloads I've seen would suggest they are rather newer than 23/8/01. It doesn't appear in the WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe archive they supplied either.

If you have any further suggestions, I'd really appreciate them because I'm so fed up with these IdioT s I'm dealing with, I'll go out tomorrow and buy my own copy at academic price, then tack the full price onto their next contract work.

Probably I am late... Anyway, if you ever planning to create bootable WinXP CD for customized installation, consider this for installing RAID and SATA controllers:

    Adding RAID/SATA text-mode drivers

Thanks for that extra info. Trouble is though, with this corrupted file on the install CD, I can't even get as far as beginning the XP installation process. I'm now awaiting an overnight Express-post delivery of the genuine article, from the reliable end of the university's IT support; rather than some drink coasters from the circus.
