    Is a skin necessary?

Sometimes, when an error occurs and the Controls Page loads, it does not have a skin. It literally just displays the raw necessaties to navigate and view. I notice in these times that the page loads more quickly due to the minimum graphic interface of colour and buttons, (Shame, even Lex does not make it then!!)
My question is, esp. for those with entry level spec PC's: Why not have a skin called "None", or if you wanna be more creative, "Clear" or "Window Pane" or "Ghost", etc. Many times this is the prefered interface that most people enjoy. A skin by any other name...

The nearest to nothing would be Oldstyle, I think, and you can opt to not show UserPics in your profile. Otherwise, it may be down to your browser settings to not show graphics.

Not sure there is much else you can do, but thanks for askin

Remember that the Lounge interface is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (which produces the "skin" of our views) removing the CSS for the Lounge would show it with just content and alt text. As Leif has said it depends on your browser settings but I have had a glitch very rarely when the CSS has not been picked up and had just text. I think it best to stay with the default OldStyle, if there is an option, as there are minimal graphics on that age. Another way , which I found assist quick download time is to switch off the flagbar using the FlagBarToggle link at the top of the page....zips through then <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Is a skin necessary?

Yes, that is good advice too. My flag bar is off though. I often sit at different computers, some are hi spec and others entry level. When at entry level PC's, I do pick up slower responses.

Tx for the good advice though. I'm sure that this will be useful at those times.

The "Whiteout" skin was designed explicitly for this purpose. Only certain elements of the Lounge UI can be controlled via skins, several graphics are embedded and will appear regardless of the stylesheet that you choose.

    Re: Is a skin necessary?

I am sorry Mark, but I think a person would have to be desperate to use the Whiteout skin! I have it on at the moment and <img src=/S/yikes.gif border=0 alt=yikes width=15 height=15> I am heading back to something else! Glad we have lots of other choices!! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Is a skin necessary?

You should have seen some of the ones that didn't make the cut... <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> Whiteout's purpose is to remain low-key so that those who would browse at work could do so inauspiciously. That is, to avoid the appearance of frittering their time away on the web. <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20>

Never did get around to designing the skin that changed based on time of day...

    Mark

I was testing the White out skin on my Ipaq PDA earlier, perfect. The baby whipped through the pages, soon got used to it and a great idea.

    Re: Is a skin necessary?

In Firefox, you can get "no skin" as follows:

View menu > Page Style > No Style

This seems to "stick" as long as you are navigating within the same tab. However, the layout may be incorrect in some cases.

In IE, you can globally substitute your own choice of skin using the Accessibility options. Since this would not be limited to the Lounge, it probably is not a helpful choice for most people.

But the real problem is that the page design dates back to a time when there were few posts and even fewer forums. As HTML tables grow, the rendering time increases disproportionately. Since we are not going to turn back the clock on the size and breadth of the Lounge, we eventually will have to rebuild all of the scripts that generate the pages. Sadly, this mammoth undertaking will not be happening any time soon.
