External Email Address in Distribution List

Can you include an external email address in an Exchange 5.5 distribution list?

I assume that you want to make a distribution list with say some staff members and perhaps suppliers?.
Exchange 5.5 allows this, I had such mixes when we had 5.5 some time ago.

Thanks for responding. Do I set them up as mail-enabled users?

Re: External Email Address in Distribution List

Normally I have created distribution lists on the user machine, not the server. As I am not using 5.5 now I cannot check if the Administrator can easily pull in addresses to a list, or if they have to be typed in manually.
I presume that you want this list available to allusers?

Re: External Email Address in Distribution List

You presume correctly. I need to create the list on the Exchange server, not on a user's workstation. I found documentation for Exchange 2000/Active Directory which said to set up a mail-enabled user, which is basically a user without a mailbox. But I've not been able to find any info on using Exchange 5.5. However, I think I'm going to go with plan B, which is to create rule to forward email from the user's mailbox to his external address. Thanks for your help.

Exchange 5.5 doesn't really have "mail-enabled" users. The mailboxes are separate from Acrive Directory users, beyond having an owner. I think what you want to do is to set up a "Custom Recipient" in the GAL.

Re: External Email Address in Distribution List

in exchange administrator for 5.5 go to file/new custom recipient then under mail type choose internet email

enter internet email address and you can then enter descriptive details

the recipient you have created can then be added to distribution lists

    **

before you do that you might want to go to file / new other / recipient container to create a seperate container for external addresses

    hope this helps
