    WordPerfect to Word (Word 2000/sp3)

Is there any way to retain accented characters when opening WordPerfect (any version) files in Word 2000? I don't have WordPerfect, so when I receive WP files, I have to open them in Word and, inevitably, if there are accented characters, they will convert to gibberish.

WordPerfect has its own symbols font. If the characters were inserted using that font, then Word might not be able to convert them. On the other hand, if the characters were inserted in the ordinary font, they should come over just fine.

There might be a way to "switch" the fonts using Find and Replace or a macro (VBA procedure), but I've never tried it.

Do you have some sample paragraphs you can post containing the problem characters?

I'm using WP10 and Word 2002, and accents in WP (e.g., in resume, ano, etc.) all converted to Word without a problem.

From the other two posts, it sounds like you need to install the Wordperfect typeface on your machine. If you do this then the characters should display properly.

Yes, you can download them from the Corel website somewhere (... I think I posted the link in the past).
OTOH, Word seems to be able to convert the symbol characters to the proper regular characters on import, in some cases.
I've never gotten my head around the problem, since there are so many possible combinations of WP versions and Word versions, and the fonts being present or missing.
Maybe you'll find some tips on Edward Mendelson's WP web site.
