    Re: text squashed to left in IE (IE v6 and other I tri

    The width is set to 185 pixels in

    <td style="width: 185px; height: 413px; vertical-align: top;" colspan="2" rowspan="1">

    If you remove the part width: 185px; the text displays normally in IE6.

    Separately, try changing your DOCTYPE from the incomplete fragment

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

    to a complete statement including a path

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

    For extra fun, try this one:

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

    Then visit the The W3C Markup Validation Service (actually the site is useful with either the Transitional or the Strict declaration).

    The important point about a DOCTYPE is that if it is recognized, the browser will change modes from an historical "quirks" mode to a "standards compliant" mode, which will theoretically make all browsers behave more similarly.

    (More on DOCTYPE declarations: W3C QA - Recommended list of DTDs you can use in your Web document.)

    text squashed to left in IE (IE v6 and other I tri

    My new web page, created with NVU, displays correctly in Firefox, but using IE the text is all squashed up to the left of the table cells. I can't see anything wrong with the HTML code, and wonder if this is just IE sulking. Please look at the page at http://www.octangle.net/precepts.htm and I attach the .htm file (in .txt format) to this question. TIA Frank

    Thanks Hans, thats worked fine. I cant see why, but then am new to HTML. NVU seemed to put the code in by itself, so there should be a way to set the defaults to be more appropritate - I shall have to RTFM.

    Jefferson, thanks for the piece about doctypes. I want to have the page look the same in all browsers (obviously) and if the 'strict' dtd is the future proof one I will use it from now on. Extra fun for me over the holidays!!!

    Wishing everyone a happy time
